You’re Cleared for Takeoff!
The Aviation Studies BBA concentration provides credit for FAA certified flight training as a part of the Bachelor’s in Business Administration degree. It is designed to provide a pathway for licensed pilots to obtain a bachelor’s degree with fewer total classes needed due to the credit counted for their certified aviation studies coursework.
Classes
Students who complete the B.B.A. with a concentration in aviation studies will be able to:
- Explain basic terms and concepts in air transportation, including commercial, military, and general aviation; air traffic control; aviation agencies and organizations; the aerospace industry; the airport environment; professional and ethical responsibilities of an aviation professional; and aviation career options.
- Demonstrate a basic working knowledge of the FAA regulations governing pilot qualifications, aircraft condition, and aircraft operations.
- Demonstrate a basic conceptual knowledge of aerodynamics, General Aviation aircraft systems, aircraft performance, and weight and balance.
- Describe aircraft maneuvers such as takeoffs, landings, stalls, spins, ground reference maneuvers, unusual attitude recoveries and basic instrument flight maneuvers.
- Demonstrate basic knowledge of contemporary issues within the aviation and aerospace industries.
The Aviation BBA Concentration requires:
- 12 hours of supporting electives (up to 15 hours can be accepted) from certified training coursework may qualify as prior learning credits
- Private Pilot
This is the fundamental pilot certificate. Privileges include flying solo in visual conditions, day or night, and carrying passengers. Privileges do not include carrying persons or property for hire. A minimum of 35 hours of flight time is required. Most students complete their training in 50-60 hours.
- Instrument Rating
In addition to a private pilot certificate, the instrument rating allows you to fly in the clouds and in low visibility. This training increases your flight and risk management skills, builds situational awareness, and makes you an overall safer pilot.
Students must also select from two of the following flight training courses:
- Commercial Pilot Certificate
This certificate authorizes you to fly people or property for hire. Training focuses on your mastery of the aircraft and sharpening your aeronautical decision-making skills. It is the next step for pursuing a professional career in aviation. - Multi-Engine Pilot Certificate
This add-on rating allows you to fly an aircraft with more than one engine. - Airline Transport Pilot Certificate
The Airline Transport Pilot Certificate (ATP) allows the holder to act as a captain on larger passenger carrying and cargo aircraft. Prerequisites include being 23 years of age; 1,500 hours of total flight time and 500 hours of cross-country flight time. - Certified Flight Instructor (CFI)
A Certificated Flight Instructor (CFI) is authorized to instruct students and pilots to achieve the following certifications: Sport, Recreational, Private Pilot, and Commercial. - Certified Flight Instrument Instructor (CFII)
A Certificated Instrument Flight Instructor (CFII) is authorized to instruct students toward their instrument rating. - Multi-Engine Instructor (MEI)
A Certificated Multi-engine Flight Instructor (MEI) is authorized to instruct pilots towards their Private and Commercial Multi-engine Rating. MEI candidates must have a Commercial Multi-engine Pilots Rating and an Instrument Rating.
Please be aware that students must secure and pay for FAA training on their own, and Shenandoah University financial aid is not available for this training.
While training can be found at flight schools across the country, Shenandoah has established a connection with Aviation Adventures, which operates in areas close to Shenandoah’s locations across the Northern Shenandoah Valley and Northern Virginia. It provides professional flight instruction out of the Winchester Regional Airport, just 3 miles from main campus. Other Virginia locations within the Aviation Adventures network include Manassas, Leesburg, Stafford and Warrenton.
The Bachelor of Business Administration degree requires:
30 credit hours of general education coursework, 42 credit hours of business-specific coursework and 24 non-business elective courses.
