Empowering Athletic Trainers to Shape Health Systems Around the World
Students are exposed to the core competencies essential for shaping local and public health systems as athletic trainers. The dual program affords individuals interested in pursuing clinical and public health training a unique opportunity to complete both programs. Students may apply their combined athletic training and public health skills in such areas as population or clinical research, health administration leadership, and community health promotion. The combined MSAT/MPH degree will enable future athletic trainers to impact population health in innovative ways.
Athletic training has a hybrid program delivery with a blend of live and online course instruction to allow for clinical placements locally and in specialty clinics around the nation. Public health courses are delivered 100% online and asynchronously.
Learn More About This Program
This dual degree program offers students an opportunity to earn a Master of Science in Athletic Training (MSAT) in conjunction with a Master of Public Health (MPH). The purpose of the dual MSAT/MPH is to graduate highly qualified health professionals who have obtained competencies necessary to succeed in the rapidly evolving health system. The dual program prepares students to enter a wide range of athletic training and public health positions that address today’s most challenging health care issues.
The value of earning an MSAT concurrently with MPH training is that it provides students with a broader perspective on health and the health system from a population perspective. Because the MPH program trains students in a core set of courses, students are trained to view health and health-care delivery from vantage points not typically taught in a clinical model curriculum. By attaining both degrees, students will possess a more holistic and global perspective on health care, the social determinants of health, and methods to track changes in health outcomes.
Classes
The total required credits for the MSAT is 70 credits and MPH is 46 credits, with 9 credits of overlap between programs. Students are expected to maintain the required GPAs in both programs and will also complete clinical field experience and research for athletic training.
The credit overlap of 9 credits is satisfied in the following ways:
- AT 501 – Emergency Care (counts as PH Elective 1)
- AT 571 – Sports Nutrition (counts as PH Elective 2)
- PH 535 – Health Communication (counts in the AT program for one of the following: AT 799, AT 720 – Wilderness First Responder or HP 550 – GEL)
Additional coursework in athletic training and public health can be viewed in the catalog.
